This event is one of the most outstanding arts festival in Asia and it has aroused many to have a brand new impression of art. 26 prominent productions and 31 exciting days. Every year, international participants take up 70% of the overall crew. This year’s SAF has hit one of the highest attendance rate of 92.5% ! There was a total of 600 over performances by 2500 artists from 26 countries coming down to our SAF. How cool is that !
I have taken some photos for this year's singapore arts festival,2009. In addition,I have also briefly described about some of the artworks and how I feel after attending them!
For more infomation about SAF, you can take a look here at http://www.singaporeartsfest.com/ .

History
Want to know more about SAF and how it came about? The origin of Singapore Arts Festivals date back to the 1977. The objective of these festivals is to urge the community to learn to appreciate arts and cultures. For the past 30 years, there is significant development of our community’s appreciation towards arts . This festival has spurred much interest in art, helped to create public awareness for demand of arts and appreciation of culture in Singapore. Some of the past years’ activities has allowed classical contemporary art to connect with the modern technology and media. For now, in year 2009, SG has successfully attracted more than 700,000 audiences from all over the world to singapore. Being nationalistic, I have to say that I am proud of singapore for that.!

Music

Calling out for fans of music! I have to admit that I really enjoy the noisy rock music and guitar serenades. One of them is “ The Music Lab” , show casing the performances brought up by students from different schools like ACJC. Personally, I have alot of friends that likes jamming (playing band music), I would definitely urge them to pay a visit here next year.

Moscow State Chamber Choir have did a really good job in their performance this year! i was mesmerized by their heavenly voices and they choreograph their performances.

Date: 11th and 12th june 2009
Prices: $60/$80

It's rather pricey, thus many of my friends hesitated when they are choosing a musical performance. However, I think that it's really worth the value!

The magic flute is performed by Impempe Yomlingo’s music director Mandisi and his other crew members. Participants learnt the instruments roaringly and rounded up the end of the show with a small performance of their own. I really liked their way of communicating with the participants and all!

Dance
Just dance~ gotta be okay, da da du du, just dance!
Sutra dance

On the other hand, there are also dance workshops like the Cullberg Ballet dance workshop (6june) just before their performance and Hip Hop workshop by Brazil’s Grupo de Rua teaching hip hop and contemporary dance. Somehow, I wished they could have opened a dance school in SG because their style of teaching is way different from what I learnt from Oschool(my dance school)! Here's a short video of me and my dance class!

I'm the girl in black hiding behind the other girls!

These participants shake it all out on that Sunday afternoon and had really lots of fun out there in the esplanade dance studio. Above that, our local dance bboy crew,Radikal force, is specially invited to perform their speciality break dancing. I bet my classmate Jun Yi must be very excited if he would have been there! He is also a breaker from Bakau Rockers Dance Crew, cool much!

Sharon! this is a must go for you! These guys are from the Cullberg ballet workshops dancing ballet and contemporary.

Theatre
A place that you can act and express oneself, someone’s story or just a simple thougt, theatre is all we need. If you like dramas or stories that set you thinking, Singapore arts festival is a must for you! In this year’s festival, there are several different shows going on like LIV (featuring Nelson Chia of Singapore),

The Cherry Orchard

Electra, The Suzuki company of toga.

RUHE(SILENCE)

This is a show about a recital of Schubert, german man. This story is brings you back to the history of Europe where interview in 1960s of the dutch veterans who struggled to join the Nazis rule. Through songs, images and movements, they will show you the confessions between the victims and predators then in central Europe.
This is a eye-catching and thrilling performance and really caught the hearts of many audiences.

Special events
Want to know something interesting? New boundaries can be created in dances too, did you know that? Transports Exceptionnels can show u how! This is a free special even held in front of Tampines 1, which shows a man dancing with a mechanic digger! I would say that it is a ‘modern romance of iron and flesh’. This has really caught the attention of many and definitely is an eye-opener for everyone. Is this really dancing? Judge it for yourself!

Another interesting event is The Diamond, showcased by The Dream Engine (UK). This is shown on the very first day of Singapore’s arts festival at Marina Bay and Merlion Park. This dance lasted for twelve minutes and is accompanied with music and different lightings. This is a short video clip of the dance.

Last but not least, Singapore arts festival 2009 ended off with a spectacular show of ‘Crackers? ‘ by the world famous (UK) on 13/14th june.

I totally love this part of the entire SAF 2009! What are the chances in a year to get to see these fireworks in singapore? This show lasted for 45 minutes full of fire, fireworks, music, performance and multi-media display. The best part is when the pyrotechnics display is an all-rounded one of a 360 degrees around the audience! Those that are not fire-lovers can still watch the amazing fireworks from far as it shoots up 30metres high in the sky, illuminating our night sky.

About 9 out of 10 of my friends have found this year SAF excellent and great! SAF09 have attracted all young, adults and the elders to participate and pay a visit to many of the performances held both indoors and outdoors. Surprisingly, despite the economy downturn Singapore did not fail to enhance the appreciation of arts in many locals and tourists. Overall, year 2009’s Singapore Arts festival have brought in more than 400 free performances and more than 1000 artists from all over the world. SAF 2009 have featured a total of 7 new commissions including 2 world premieres and 5 Asian premieres. It will continue to act as a world global connector in the international festival circuit and also a ground for locals to enhance their passion and love for arts.

In conclusion, Out of the whole 1 month of SAF 2009, I still prefer the dance courses most. Fun, exciting and overwhelming! So, I shall starting saving up my pocket to go for more of these courses of next year's 2010 SAF as the prices are really not cheap):

Singapore Arts festival 2010
Last but not least,if you have missed out this year’s 2009 SAF, fret not! There will be SAF 2010, held from 14thof May 2010 to 13th June 2010. Next year’s theme will be Kid’s stuffs, Art and literature, theatre and film, dance, spectacle, culture and music. In addition, if you want to find out more about SAF tour packages, you can take a look here http://www.airfaresflights.com.au/Holidays/Singapore over here, it'll summarise the various different festivals and locations in singapore and definitely inclusive of SAF.If you are interested, you may try out at GTA Travel or Octopus Travel companies. you will be able to book tickets online and manually.
